I've never had a rice cooker so have nothing to compare it to. I must say the instructions on this thing leave much to be desired. They don't really seem to make sense and don't really give you any instruction, just ratios. However, that being said, it seems to be relatively self explanatory. I plopped brown rice in the cooker with the appropriate ratio of water, added the top basket with some chopped carrots, closed the lid, and turned it on. The carrots were cooked perfectly (maybe a little overcooked, but still. I'm amazed since baking or boiling takes forever with carrots) and so was the rice. I'm not a huge fan of rice but hubby likes it, and although I can cook it I find it annoying. So, now we have something we can make rice in and steam veggies. I believe we might also be able to steam meat as well . . .maybe will try that another time. Either way, I think I'll be using this more often!
