DO NOT BUY - Worst kitchen utensil ever

This thing is totally useless. I cannot believe that Calphalon made this or even put their name on it. I do not know who performed the quality control, but it does not cut evenly. The veggies tend to get caught in the v-part of the blade. Worse yet, pieces of the harder veggies such as carrots and parsnips get caught under the bottom slide plate. At first, I thought that I was doing something wrong. I watched several You-Tube videos that demonstrate the Calphalon Mandoline Slicer, i used a lot of care to replicate their motions and technique. I could not get it to cut anything right. Onions, parsnips, tomatoes, cucumbers, all just as bad. The blade is just not sharp enough and poorly designed. DO NOT BUY this product.

I was so excited to buy a mandoline for homemade potato chips. I opted for the more expensive Calphalon over the cheaper OXO because typically Calphalon makes decent cookware. The first one I brought home had a giant gouge in the frame. It wouldn't have altered the cutting, but for $80 it shouldn't have a defect, in my opinion. So I exchanged it.
I am extremely disappointed in this product and will be returning it now that I have actually used it. Doesn't cut evenly and the slices are so thick - even on the thinnest setting - that there is no way they will ever be potato chips. More like potato hunks.
The waffle blade doesn't work at all. The slice falls through the blade before you have the chance to cut it a second time.
The protector piece folds in as you cut the veggie, and eventually you end up chopping up the rubber part of the protector with the veggie. Poor, poor design.
I don't think the blades are not sharp enough to use safely, you have to push so hard I think it is dangerous.
If I had paid $12 I wouldn't expect much. But for $80 I expected a bit more usability. It is a piece of garbage.

I am not a “review writer” generally. I don’t want to take the time. But I HAD to write a review for this product. If I had gone by all of the other reviews for this product I would NEVER have purchased it, but I do have a little OCD and ALL of my other kitchen things are made by Calphalon, and I love all of them. The OCD comes in because in spite of the reviews that I read, I bought this anyway so it was the “matching” piece to all my other utensils and I figured if it really was horrible I would return it. Ok, so it’s great! The blades are very sharp and they should be. I did cut my thumb, but it was my own fault. I wasn’t using the hand thing and I put my “cut proof glove” on the other hand and then switched hands without thinking about it. The cutting is easy and even. Because of the other reviews I read, I paid close attention. There were a few uneven pieces, but the unevenness was due to the shape of the vegetable and not the blade. Also, with the Julienne attachments, you do NOT need to separate the pieces once you’ve sliced them. When you put either Julienne blade in, you also need to layer it by putting the straight blade on top of the Julienne blade. People who said it doesn’t work must not have read the instructions or something (I didn’t either but it just looked to me like that was the way to do it and I was right). Also, for those who said it was a 3hour ordeal to take apart to clean – I also didn’t read the instructions, but using my brain, I was able to take it apart in under a minute, wash it and dry in in another 2 or 3 minutes and that was that. I mean, all these reviews really couldn’t be more wring about this product. I love it, and Calphalon has continued to keep me impressed with their products. Excellent, five stars, yadda yadda yadda. Don’t pay any attention to these other reviews. They are not accurate.
Just a few fun notes to the previous reviewers:
“It may look easy to use, but the precision mandoline is remarkably sharp and incredibly dangerous. The item lacks appropriate safety warnings and specific instructions to protect users.” – OK, so you are using a mandolin. Mandolin 101 is that the blade is really frickin' sharp as heck. Don’t put your fingers near the blade. End of ‘Common Sense 101’.
“There really isn't a good way to clean it except to take it almost completely apart and then put it all back together to store.” – So, this is how I generally clean all my kitchen appliances. Food processor, I dismantle it to wash it. Blender, I take it apart to wash it. I don’t wash my pots and pans with the lid on, I take it off and wash it separately. Get my point? This reviewer claims to be proficient in the kitchen but is surprised at taking something apart to clean it?! Well enough said there. Ok, not enough said. This is the same person who says that the julienne blade doesn’t work and obviously didn’t put the thing together properly with the two blades and could figure that out. So, now, enough said.
“If you need an expensive item to help injure yourself, then this is the one for you!!!” – Oh boy, here we go again! Do you know what it is you purchased when you purchased a mandolin? It’s not a Barbie Doll, it isn’t an iPad, it’s a SHARP INSTRUMENT! All mandolines should be! Jeez!
Removing upper platform for cleaning necessitated calling the company for support. It took them several tries to make it work & explain to me that the dial labeled "Remove to Clean" needed to actually be turned PAST the labeled mark...way past in order for the upper platform to be removed for cleaning. Who would have known? – I KNEW!!! I KNEW!!!! I moved the dial in the direction that had an arrow and said something like turn the dial to here to remove the thing to clean it” or maybe a more concise version of that sentence. I did that. Lo and behold, it worked! My stars! I was worried about spending hours on hold with Calphalon to figure this one out after reading this review. Luckily, I took Common Sense 101 (above) and it paid off!

Worst Mandoline Made

I tried for so long to use this mandoline while cooking. It is a piece of junk. I am fairly proficient in the kitchen as I do most of our cooking at home and was given this mandoline as a gift. To be fair I had researched it some and thought it was a good one to ask for. I was wrong. To start with the body is incredibly flimsy and the blade storage compartment and lifting plate on top make is extremely hard to clean. There really isn't a good way to clean it except to take it almost completely apart and then put it all back together to store. The second part is that it slicing is very inconsistant. slices are thick on one end and thin on the other (no matter which thickness you are shooting for) and it never slices as thin as it claims it can. Also when using the julienne blades, it doesn't cut the strips all the way through meaning you have to hand separate each strip. The last part and this is the most frustrating is that it is built to keep you hand safe but sabotages itself in the process... I like the silicone grip that surrounds the food and collapses in on itself while slicing but the blades are not sharp enough to do the job well. Meaning you have to roughly force the food through making it incredibly dangerous to use. The "safety" spring guard that comes up to protect your hand from the blade when not in use doesn't really cover the blade well and you or a family member could do themselves serious harm if handling the body of the mandoline.
I am not stupid. I know mandolines in general are dangerous but this one is more so because it doesn't do the slicing job it was meant to do. The hand guard never sits on the edges of the body the way it is supposed to and the silicone can get caught and sliced up... with your fingers inside possibly. I was able to return this to Bed Bath and Beyond after the warranty had expired for a store credit (LOVE them!). Do yourself a favor and buy a Benriner Mandoline. It may be dangerous but it does precisely what it is supposed to do and does it well. After all it's the one that professional chefs use on Iron Chef and other programs and it's the one they use in their own kitchen. No matter what mandoline you get, buy a cut proof glove to go with it. I never use something like a mandoline without wearing one. I recommend the BladeX5. I have a pair and they are wonderful.

Worst Mandolin Ever

Worst possible design for a mandolin I could imagine. I used it first for slicing cucumbers, but everytime I used it fragments of cucumber would become lodged under the ramp and cause it to jam (and push my hand into the blade). Tried it with various other fruits and vegetables with the same result. It's just not a practical tool to have in the kitchen.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME, MONEY, OR FINGERTIPS ON THIS PIECE OF JUNK!!!

This thing is about what it can't cut, not what it can. Don't buy it until Calphalon can sell an $80 product that works. Taking this piece back.

Hello: sharp edges! I'm sorry but I've worn out maybe 10 mandolin type cutters over the years, and am shopping again for a new one. IT's SUPPOSED TO HAVE SHARP EDGES!!! If you follow the instructions, you don't cut your silly fingers. Sheesh.

This cutting instrument looks like it's built to the standard we've all come to expect from the Calphalon brand, but it's just not the case. It may look easy to use, but the precision mandoline is remarkably sharp and incredibly dangerous. The item lacks appropriate safety warnings and specific instructions to protect users. The warning sticker with instructions on how to disable the safety protector on the cutting blade is deceiving to first-time users. The grip is awkward when used with items like cucumbers, which snag on the blade. It also has extra space to move back and forth across the cutting plane instead of just up and down, making it less secure.
I know because I amputated the top portion of my finger the first time I used the product. What's worse, Calphalon customer service says they're not allowed to talk to me -- they've referred me to their insurance adjusters. And when I tried to post my concerns on their Facebook page, they blocked me. Clearly they don't want other potential customers to know what I learned the hard way after a trip to the ER and having the severed end of my digit stitched back on -- this mandoline is a finger guillotine, and those who use it do so at great risk of personal injury.
Cutting veggies by hand may be time consuming and labor intensive, but I wish I'd stuck with it instead of losing a huge chunk of my fingertip. Save your money and your fingers -- don't buy this one.

Tried using this one time to cut potatoes into french fries and it didn't work at all. Even my husband didn't have enough strength to shove the potato over the blades. It was almost like the blades weren't sharp enough. Will be returning this for store credit (considering it was a gift).

I really love my Calphalon mandoline. Its very ergonomic and does an amazing job...and I don't have to worry that my kids are going to cut their fingers off when they help me in the kitchen. I've gotten alot more creative in my presentation so food seems more fun!

Returned it. Mandoline has good safety features but poor performance. The thinnest slice setting was too thick – thicker than the thinnest setting of my economy single /fixed blade mandoline. E.g., poor for making thin slices of fennel. Moreover, blade storage inside the body of the unit complicates cleaning the main part of the body. Mechanisms are awkward to adjust. Finally, the food holder has two parts, and some older folks might find it hard to push down the collapsible base in order to make the holder pins in the top piece grip food.
