Breville Breville® the Smart Grinder™ Model BCG800XL

Hardened stainless steel conical burrs deliver a precise and even grind with minimal flavor loss. Conical burr grinders transfer less heat than blade grinders for a better result. The Dosing IQ™ automatically calibrates each dose every time the grind settings are adjusted. This machine automatically grinds for direct dosing into a portafilter, a grinds container or a drip filter basket and allows for manual strength adjustment (weak/strong). The sleek, stainless steel grinder features a backlit LCD screen that displays 25 grind settings, number of cups/shots and customized grind amount. It includes two portafilter cradles, a grind container and a cleaning brush. Measures 15 1/2" H x 8 1/4" W x 6" L. Model BCG800XL

Best Purchase Ever

I bought the Breville Smart Grinder to use with the Breville Dual Boiler expresso machine. I do not have any problems with the Smart Grinder and the grinds. I clean my machine once a week to prevent any oil build up. So far I have only used Expresso Blend medium roast coffee in my Breville Smart Grinder. I only use medium roast beans because the dark roast beans has more oil.The design is beautiful and sit perfectly next to my Breville Dual Boiler Expresso Machine. The Smart Grinder noise level is very low. It is very easy to pull apart and clean. I never fill the hopper with a full 12oz bag of expresso blend coffee beans. I would only use a little and keep the rest in the bag for freshness.

I have had my grinder now for about 2 months and it has been working perfectly. I have read of people having problems grinding at the "fine" or "espresso" setting.
I have mainly been using it for my automatic drip coffee maker and it has been working with no problems.
I just set it for how course I want the beans to be and how many cups I will be making a turns out great everytime.
It is also easy to take apart and clean out when switching to another type of coffee to grind.
I read someone had a problem grinding Starbucks beans.......nonsense! I have ground Starbucks and Tim Hortons. Works fine whether the beans are oily or not.

Won't grind Starbucks - don't buy!!

I just got my grinder along with a dual boiler espresso machine. I plugged it in, put beans in the hopper, and couldn't get any espresso grind out. I talked to tech support twice, the first tech having me run the machine through various coarseness settings and it worked for a minute then clogged up. I called again, and the second tech told me the problem was that I was using Starbuck beans and they are somehow incompatible with the Smart Grinder. I asked how Starbucks managed to grind any doses in their stores and he fed me some line about how they don't have baristas at Starbucks... haha. They may have replaced them all with automatic machines, but there was a day when they pulled shots manually.
Has anyone else had this experience, or is my machine defective? I've had various machines and grinders over the years and I have run hundreds of pounds of Starbucks espresso thorough them without any hiccups. Now this thing balks out of the chute. I'm going to try to figure out if my machine is defective, or if it's that finicky. If you aren't willing to find "dry" beans, don't buy this machine.

Very nice grinder

Most noticeable is how quiet (but strong sounding) the Breville grinder is compared to other grinders I've had. It's also very easy to set the amount and grind for your particular need. I've used it primarily for a French Press, course grind and it's great. The grind is consistent and does not build up with a fine dust-like grind that gets thrown around making a mess. No static build up that I can see. Clean-up is very easy. One time in about 50 grinds it ran without grinding, even though there were plenty of beans in the hopper. A little shake resolved the issue, but concernes me a little. I thought I could smell the motor. Hasn't happened again. Maybe using the oily Starbucks French Roast exacerbates the problem. My old grinder did it a lot. All in all, so far so good.

Pros: Quiet, easy to clean, easy to adjust grind.
This is, of course, in comparison to other grinders.
Cons: Well, perhaps not a "con" but something you should note. The digtial read-out is really just an approximation. So much depends on the type of beans that you use. Also, I have noticed that
some people have complaints about not grinding coarse enough. It is possible to adust the grind by turning the knob beyond what the read-out shows.
There are several "clicks" possible beyond what
the graphic read-out shows. If you still cannot get a grind that is coarse enough there is something wrong with your machine.
All in all, very easy to use and maintain.

Possible Lemon

It is possible that I need to do an exchange. But, after looking at reviews on Amazon, people seem to have the same issue that I am. Anytime I set the grind in the "espresso" region I get "flour" type texture and the lowest grind is barely good enough for 'filter' machines. On the positive side, it does give a consistent grind regardless of the setting, it is not as loud as other products. It can grind auto or manual. I may change this review if the replacement one is better, if not, the shim "fix" that Breville did for this model was a failure.

My research proved to be correct

I have no experience with customer service as I have not needed them. All other aspects of the grinder are spot on. I have owned this grinder for about 3 months now and I am very fond of it. It is the 2nd Breville appliance I own and I am pleased with both. This grinder is very clean, easy to use, and enables one to get the exact grind and quantity they desire and then remembers the settings. If you cannot make a good cup of coffee the fault will be yours not the machine. I use a dark French Roast and I have yet to clean the grinder. It works flawlessly. I have used many grinders and this one offers the best combination of performance and convenience. I see only one bad review referring to plugging up and frankly it is likely due to a manufacturing defect. alb66 should have returned the machine for another one as additional research will not find a better unit for anywhere close to the money. As I always do before a purchase, I spend a great deal of time researching. This was an informed purchase and I am very pleased with the product. What more can I say? I found the better price on BBBY after use of their discount coupons. I ordered from the store and they shipped it to my home freight free.

After reading several reviews & seeing a few demonstrations online, to then wait a good week in anticipation for the grinder to show up at our doorstep, we found the grinder to short change us on the first grind on medium for our poor over. We then tried a fine espresso grind to see maybe a quarter teaspoon! Turns out the problem was that the grounds failed exit the machine causing it to plug up. So much for the grinder's suggested monthly clean up for oily beans, as in Starbucks French Roast!
After a thorough cleanup, we returned it to go back to a research mode...

I love this grinder

After extensive research, I settled on the Smart Grinder and how pleased I am that I did. This is a remarkable product and like other Breville appliances, a joy to use.
Forget the mess of grinding coffee, this one is very clean to use. No static cling and easy to clean when the time comes.
The grind is very consistent from espresso to press pot. The size of the grind appears to be perfect for the various applications. The ability to make very small adjustment in grind size and quantity of coffee ground enables one to tailor the perfect cup of coffee. Then the thing actually remembers what you did, so you can reproduce your efforts from pot to pot even when you change the number of cups to brew.
This product is very well designed and performs exactly as advertised. I can find no short comings. That is amazing because I am a pretty picky guy.
Noise level is less than many grinders, though I haven't tried them all. In any case, it certainly is acceptable and will not wake the house.
The upper coffee bin will hold an entire bag of coffee and is well sealed to preserve the freshness. This is too easy to use, I feel like I am cheating. No measuring, no scooping, just push the button, pour it into the coffee filter and it is a done deal.
I have owned the Breville Smart oven for several years and I am constantly amazed at how well it works. I am sure the Smart Grind will be the same.
Buy it, you will like it. I do not often give 5 stars.

Everything about this grinder is great. I've been usintg it for a couple weeks and the grind results are perfectly repeatable, giving the same results every time. Finally a grinder worthy of Peet's beans.

Awesome! I installed the shim kit from service (very easy) and I can now grind down to the extreme fineness needed for "some" manual espresso machines. I use it for espresso and regular coffee. There are many machines that work as well but cost LOTS more. I'd buy it again.

Great grinder, poor customer service

This is a very nice grinder – very easy to use, as close to zero mess as you can get, broad range of grind options, and very uniform grind size. So why only 1 star? The complete and total lack of customer support from Breville.
I’ve been trying to get a replacement hopper since the one that came with the unit was cracked. Don’t even try to get them on the phone – you’ll wait on hold forever (gave up after 70 min). They do answer emails, but they do not appear to actually read the email. I requested a replacement hopper; they sent me a lid. Contacted them again, and they just keep saying that I received the replacement. Getting them to understand that they sent me the wrong part appears to be impossible.
When you charge a premium price for a product as Breville does, you should back that with premium customer service. Breville is sorely lacking in the customer support department.
Great grinder, but be aware that you’re on your own if something goes wrong. Breville doesn’t care once they have your money.

Decent Grinder, bad Espresso Machines

I purchased this grinder to compliment my Breville Espresso Machine. It looks really nice and high end, and does a fine job at grinding and allowing control of the grind settings. Now if only the Breville Espresso machines were as good as the grinder they make.
