Little Tricks Make it better

Had it for a few weeks now and love it. It did not start out that way because I did not fully read the instructions, I'm a man, Baby!!! So some things I learned are... The grinder is automatic and grinds the right amount when you press in the porta filter once and release. Expect to waste a bag (1lb) of beans playing - i did. I used supermarket bean from the dispenser - not good, stay away from them. I suspect they were a few months old... I bought Starbucks beans, they are oily, but the flavor was fantastic. Use a small plate under the grinder when grinding, it makes clean up super-easy. I use the single wall filter with the grind dial set to 12. Practice tamping, not too much or too little. I don't use the steamer attachment, I've been using the Breville milk carafe which is awesome because all you do is pour the milk and press a button, make the espresso and in a few minutes pour the hot milk.

Love This Machine

If you have at least 3 or more coffee drinkers in your house, you won't even have to try hard to make your money back with this machine. Don't hesitate, just buy the machine. We compared, shopped, compared and twisted our minds around whether it would really be worth spending 600$ (minus 20%) on an espresso machine - we bought it 24 hours ago and I can already tell you - it was worth it! The entire family agrees! (We've calculated that we've made about 100$ worth of lattes, espresso, cappuccinos, and fraps in the last 24 hours - for 4 people drinking coffee, its not that hard to do). The built in grinder allows for almost ZERO waste with your grinds - DEFINITELY glad we chose this model with the built in grinder. I haven't even refilled the hopper yet from the first fill! Also, I have absolutely NO experience whatsoever making espresso (NONE WHATSOEVER) and I just read the quick start directions and followed them, and every shot has been perfect. It comes with everything you need. If you want sweet drinks, pick up hot chocolate mix to add in and whipped cream. Other than that, we used Starbucks whole bean espresso beans from Farm Fresh as a starting bean. What is simpler than that? My family is looking at me like I am a genius. This is just a darn good machine!

We were very depressed at the lack of great tasting coffee, so we decided to purchase the Breville Barista Express Espresso Machine and it works FANTASTIC! This machine has given me no issues and makes great espresso and all the other must have drinks. I was so impressed with the quality of this product that I purchased their mixer and food processor. Bed Bath and Beyond offers a great deal when you use their 20% off coupons...they beat all the competitor's prices.

First of all, this machine makes terrific espresso. So good you'll never go back to Starbucks on a regular basis. Got my machine in November 2011 and after learning the various nuances of the machine I must say The Breville folks have truly engineered a winner with the 860. Once however a coffee bean jammed in the grinder causing it to refuse to function. Simply grinding a batch with the largest setting on the machine cleared the obstruction and life is beautiful once again.
I liked this machine enough to purchase two more as Christmas gifts for my daughters. Don't forget to use your 20% discount coupon for your purchase.

I believe the problem I had with my previous unit may *NOT* have been the result of a defective product: upon receiving the replacement unit, I ran it through a cycle to pull a shot of espresso and the same problem happened (with a brand new unit, straight out of the box) - but I had the grinder set to the finest setting, using the dual-wall filter. I googled around to see if other espresso machines had this sort of problem, and found out that if your grind is too fine, it will keep water -- any water at all -- from passing through the grinds, so you'll end up with an empty cup & a machine that just keeps running. So I now know that it's possible that I returned to Breville a fully-functional unit. If you happen to be having this same problem (steam wand works but no coffee comes through the portafilter) you may be having the same problem, which is coffee that's too finely-ground. I suggest buying a can of Illy pre-ground espresso and giving that a try: that's how I realized that I was grinding my beans too fine. When replaced with the pre-ground Illy, the machine worked fine. Would I buy this unit again? Yes. In fact, I'd probably step up to the dual-boiler model!

I bought this machine a couple weeks ago. I did notice the large number of negative reviews on Amazon & the few on here, all of which seemed to be of the same nature, but I figured that people are always more likely to write a review if they got a lemon than if they liked something, so I took them with a grain of salt and finally splurged on a nice espresso machine: the Barista Express.

It worked great for the first 2 weeks, and the customer support guy is fantastic: he'll help you tweak the settings so you can wind up with the perfect cup of espresso (it's something that takes some experimenting until you land on the right settings, as is the case with any espresso machine). And then yesteday I steamed some milk with the steamer wand, then tried to pull a shot of espresso and.... nothing happened. The machine made its usual whirring noises like the water was about to pump, but the water never came through. It just kept whirring and whirring until I hit the "shot" button to make it stop. I reset the machine, unplugged and replugged it, and tried it again: same problem. But the steam wand still worked, which meant that the pump was still working.

I called Breville this morning & they gave me a case # and are sending a prepaid Fedex label so that this can be shipped back, and then they'll send me a new unit. I appreciate their wanting to make good on a bad machine, but when my problem falls in line with so many other problems, it starts to seem less like a one-off lemon and more like a problem that is inherent to the product itself. I gave it 2 starts because for the 2 weeks that it worked, it was fantastic espresso. But that's not the kind of thing you'd want to say about a machine that you finally, after hemming-and-hawing over for a year, decided to plunk $600 down on. I hoped I would be one of the lucky ones who got a working machine, and sadly, I was one of the unlucky ones who got a machine that gave up the ghost way too quickly.

I have been looking to get a machine for a while and when i saw this i thought it was way to expensive, but my husband bought it for me for christmas anyway. IT IS THE BEST MACHINE I EVER HAD!.. It froths the milk perfectly, and just knowing that each cup of coffee is ground to your liking just makes me so happy!.. It also does not leave the coffee tasting burnt like some machines do. I would recommend this machine to anyone.. It is well worth the money!

I couldn't be happier with the results this machine delivers. At times, the burr grinder needs a little help with the feed. But I expected that based on the stand alone burr grinder I already own and the reviews of this machine I read before buying. It is also insignificant to me when I think about the quality of the expresso I get from this machine.

It took some practice to get up and running. It was a giant step up from the Krups Il Primo I owned for 15 years.

It really is a practiced art to make good espresso -- if you are not patient and don't have an interest in all the nuances of good coffee drink making, maybe this isn't for you. But I couldn't be happier with my purchase ....

The machine works exactly as advertised. It's easy to make a delicious expresso or latte. My non-tech spouse found the manual to be easy to read and very helpful. The only drawback is that the grinder is a little loud to use when others are sleeping nearby.

I just got this barista machine and I love it. It's so much easier than I thought it would be from making the drinks to cleanup! I found the dual settings to work out great for me and make a double shot with the dual filter to get a perfect latte. I cannot believe how wonderful it tastes! So much better than the Coffee houses! Not a hint of any bitterness and so smooth. With the money I will save on buying lattes, I will have this machine paid for in less than a year. For the money, a really great and professional machine. I highly recommend it!

I've read all the reviews and while I've only used this machine for a week, here are my initial thoughts. I cannot speak to its reliability, it could die tomorrow or in 5 years, so we'll see, and I am sorry for all of you who have problems with the machine. What I can comment on - its ease of use, smart design, great espresso, and some people leaving reviews are missing the point and should quit trying to make their own drinks and go back to Starbucks. Making good espresso takes practice, patience and some skill, so if you want a plug and play machine that just spits out your favorite drink, go to Starbucks. But if you want to take some time, experiment and learn something, give it a try - My wife and I have made 2-4 drinks a day for a week. Once we learned the nuances (after 2 days) grind size, grind amount - I'm very happy. The grinder is small, so keep after it. I see people "complaining" about this. It's not a professional-sized machine, so you cannot put a month worth of beans into it, and who wants to, we change between regular and decaf - it's a smart-size and fits well in our medium kitchen. You need to learn how much coffee you need for 2 shots, etc. and how to tamper correctly, and do not rely on the programmed buttons to know that you don't know what you are doing, just push the grinder until you have enough, tamper it well, and hold the brew button until you get 2-3 oz – buy or find a few shot glasses. We learned quick that the steam wand spits our water at first, so wait for the steam to build up before you drop it in the milk. For the price, this is your best option. Yes there are better machines but once you get a machine + grinder w/ doser, you are now well over a $1000 and you’ll take up twice the space. The coffee takes great and cleaning is easy, they even have a drawer in the back that keeps your supplies. So far very happy and I looked for weeks. I hope it holds up.

Another defective Breville product

After having 2 Breville Cafe Modena machines ($100 machine) for very brief periods due to machine failure I spent the big bucks on the Barista Express ($600 machine). Good looking machine with nice features but once again Breville's execution failed. Didn't heat brewing water up to advertised temp, could not get pressure gauge to register (see numerous complaints on this issue on Breville's own website) then the on-board grinder quit feeding beans through the mill. All this within 2 days of purchase. I can't say with certainty if Breville's problems lie with their designs or manufacturing quality control but either way this has been a series of very disappointing experiences. Breville's customer service was also inadequate. Three strikes - Breville is OUT.
The good news: Bed, Bath & Beyond's no-hassle return policy has made getting my money refunded easy and earned my loyalty.

I bought the Barista about a year ago. First I found the cleaning instructions in the brochure unclear and inadequate so that I had to email for instructions.A few weeks ago, the grinding mechanism stopped working. .I cleaned as instructed. I wrote to Breville to say that on the finest grind, I got large pieces of coffee. Their response was to clean it AGAIN. I did and could not get it to work,. I sent Model number,Batch number, place of purchase, price and receipt promptly as requested . I received another request to clean signed by another person. Seems one responder does not know what the other is doing. . I have not heard from them since despite several emails. A customer who invested $600+ in one of their coffee makers should receive better service. Don't count of Breville. . I am amazed that another reviewer got two replacements . I doubt that I will get one.

I have used many Espresso machines in the past but this one is by far the best. You can adjust the settings for your taste with the adjustment offered and the result, after a few tries, should suit your taste. Although the coffee storage on the machine is capacious, it is best to load it with the amount of beans necessary at the moment you use it. Don't use anything but regular beans without any flovor additives.

I know of of no other machine in its price range that even comes close to it.

I had done extensive research and was hesitant to purchase this product simply because I didn't know any friends or family who owned this product...the marketing sold me and I haven't looked back.

Read the instructions or watch the u tube video if you'd like to see it in action like me! Yeah it's loud, but tell me what product isn't. I'm 7 months into my use and keep it clean to produce the best results.

My final recommendation, make sure to purchase a good quality espresso bean. The product doesn't turn a bad bean into a great taste!

I tried 4 other machines before I landed on this breville trough the advice of my brother who owns one and loves it. truly a great easy functional machine no muss no fuss. Chutes out the very best shot very hot and efficante every time never wavers. You truly can not go wrong I have tried ervery high end Italian machine out their and way to tempermental for something that is truly so basic. the pressure gauge is wonderful and very accurate also and love the fact it spits out the water sitting in the machine so you are not drinking stale water. Can not rave enough so far so good will keep my fingers crossed because this has been a task.

Bought this brand espresso maker because the quality of my Breville juicer is excellent. I have had no problems with clogged anything....of course I clean all parts immediately after use. Have had this product for several months now and love it! Nice to have the grinder attatched as a spacesaver and value feature. It is not difficult to learn to make the perfect espresso either. Have had other machines and this is far superior. So far soo good! You can grind the coffee while the steamer is working. timesaver! I always run some water through the head first to help warm my cup. If milk is heated thoroughly it is nice and hot for the finished product. The machine did seem to have a break-in period to do its best. I use for 1 or more cappacinos every day.
