This iron is exactly what I had hoped for. It has a dedicated space on my counter, so I don't use the lock feature much, but I am glad it's there for times when this will go into a cupboard. I use the darkest setting and then crisp waffles in the oven for 5-10 min. One waffle is a nice breakfast for two. Beware, if you use buttermilk batter, 1-1.5 c is more than enough, otherwise you will have an overflow situation on your hands.

It's a little bit bigger than I wanted, but it stores easily. I need to find a better waffle mix. The Aunt Jemima didn't come out crispy.

In the past I have purchased less expensive Waffle Makers with no success of getting a real non-stick surface. This is my first Calphalon Waffle Maker and I love it. I was very hesitant to purchase because of the price but after the first use I knew it was worth every penny. No issues with sticking - ever and waffles turn out perfect every time. I love the fact that you can adjust the temperature from low to high depending on how you like your waffles. I also love the fact that it is very compact and has a lock so you can store it upright without it spreading apart. Best waffle maker on the market.

This is undoubtedly the best waffle maker that we have ever owned! The waffles were perfect and easily removed from the grids. The clean up was unbelieveably easy. The unit stores neatly. No muss and no fuss! We love it!

When my kids grew up I thought I would never need another waffle maker so I gave mine away to one of my children. It was a great waffle maker and I didn't think I would find anything close to it.
I bought this one on the chance it might "do". I used it today for the first time and it was great. The waffles all released easily, first to last one cooked , without any grease or oil on the plates . The degree of "doneness" was accurately reflected in the temp setting. Some liked dark , crunchy waffles and a medium-high setting worked for those , others liked lighter , softer waffles and a setting on the high side of light worked for those. I am extremely pleased with the performance of this waffle iron and I will buy them for gifts this Christmas.

Easy to use. Waffles don't stick snd are easy to remove. Use highest setting to get waffle cooked. Would be easier to clean if plates were removable.
Need a good appetite...waffle is quite large.

I'm a chef and have been working in restaurants for 16 years straight. This isn't a commercial waffle maker like the Kitchenaid, but it also costs half as much and works better than you will ever need it to for home use. If you read the negative reviews on here, they do have legitimate issues, but they are not the fault of the unit so much as the user's technique. To get a nice golden brown waffle that doesn't stick at all and doesn't overflow, you only need to do a few simple things.
First, make a good leavened waffle batter. It is easy and fast, just find a recipe that uses instant yeast and pretty much all you have to do is measure, mix, and wait. DO NOT use the recommended 2 cups of batter with a leavened batter, or it will over flow. If you look at the batter recipes provided in the manual, they only use chemical leavening, not yeast and don't require any resting time so they will generate less rise and less elastic batter to hold onto it. The waffles will also turn out like funny shaped pancakes, not crispy, airy waffles. To avoid this, just use a waffle batter with real organic leavening with a little baking soda and powder added right before cooking to add a little extra lift. Of course this batter will expand a lot more than the manufacturer's recipes so use less. Just enough to barely cover the bottom half of the iron is a good starting point. You may want to place it on a sheet pan the while you experiment to expedite your clean up.
Second, select the proper heat setting and allow the iron ample time to get there. The lights and audio indicator worked accurately for this on the iron I purchased. I recommend the setting two clicks below "medium", but this will vary based on batter consistencies and starting temperatures, so mess around and see what works with your recipe and personal preference. A good general tip is to allow your batter to come to room temperature before cooking as the yeast will be more active and it will cook through more evenly. I have never needed to use a non-stick spray or oil of any kind to get the waffles to release easily and have actually found that at settings in the range I'm using the thin layer of oil distributed by an aerosol or pump sprayer begins to burn very quickly on the top part of the iron while I am loading the batter into the bottom half. It doesn't affect the taste very much but it will make one side of your waffles look a lot darker than you probably want and, as I've already said, it isn't necessary to keep the waffles from sticking so why bother?
Lastly, listen to the iron (and it's instructions). Since the light gauge and audio indicator are tied to the heat of the plates and not a timer, this is the best way to tell when your waffle is done/set the way you want it. If you ask any really nerdy and precise bakers, they'll tell you that internal temperature is the most reliable measure of doneness in a yeast leavened product like this. Since waffles are relatively then and fast cooking, surface temperature is an accurate indicator of internal doneness. Also, it would be really hard to use a probe thermometer on the waffle and still be able to close the iron completely.
Cleaning according to the manufacture's instructions is also important to ensure the continued non-stickiness of your cooking surface. If you only put batter into it when it is properly heated, you will never need anything more than a slightly damp paper towel to wipe it clean. If you do insist on using a non-stick spray, you might have to use a little elbow grease because when oils like that break down at high temperatures, which they will invariably do on this iron, they get sticky and gummy and develope an acrid smell and taste. My recommendation is to just not sue them, but if you do, you should still never use anything more abrasive than a kitchen cloth or paper towel to wipe it down and I'd also caution against using soap since it is would be pretty tough to get all of it off an appliance with this type of surface which you cannot submerge in water.
If you can follow those simple instructions, this product should give you perfect waffles very consistently and for a long time. If you can't, unfortunately I don't think there is a product on the market that will allow you to make the kind of waffles you'd like.

I have looked for the perfect waffle maker and found it. It truly does not need to be oiled before putting mix in, takes about one minute to preheat (if that) and takes about 1-2 minutes tops to bake. I set it at the end of medium setting and turns out perfect every time. I use my own recipe not a package mix and it has 6 tblsp oil in the recipe (4 cups approx) and makes 2 sets (batches, large squares) and they are perfect every time. My only problem was the finish along the middle edge started to rub off when wiped with a wet paper towel once it cooled off but returned it and no problem with the second one.

Plastic Odor

I purchased this waffle maker after reading all of the rave reviews. I'm disappointed to say that I haven't made waffles with it yet. The waffle maker emits a strong plastic odor when it is on. I have tried to burn it off by heating it for awhile but that didn't do the trick. I returned the first one and purchased another. Calphalon Customer Service told me to thoroughly wipe the plates before use and I did so. It still smells of burning plastic. Has anyone else had this experience?

Received this off of our wedding registry. We have eaten waffles just about every day this week. We love it!!
This is a fantastic waffle maker! Makes perfect waffles every time. They turn out beautifully golden brown and fluffy. All you do is let the iron preheat, wait for the initial beep, pour your favorite batter, and then wait for the next beep! I would recommend this to anyone.
**Hint!! Want to try something new? Instead of adding milk to your batter, add dark chocolate milk and chocolate chips! Yummy and chocolatey! If it is Christmas season, you can add eggnog instead of milk!

I found this to be a very nice waffle maker, with an alarm to let you know when it is hot enough for the batter, and another to let you know when the wafffle is ready. My only caution to you is that even though instructions state to pour in 2 cups of batter, 1 1/4 cups was more appropriate for mine as two cups overflowed when I closed the lid. What a mess! Darkness can be adjusted. I think I will enjoy this.

This is the BEST waffle maker I have seen in decades. I have also found that this one can actually out produce my children's rate of consumption (no waiting). This machine cooks the waffles perfectly every time with a wide variety of doneness settings. This is one of the best makers I have found that actually DOES NOT STICK to the cooking surface (even when we add chocolate chips, blueberries, etc...). I don't have to spray PAM on the surface like others in the past (making them gross and greasy/ fried). I would absolutely purchase another one tomorrow if I needed one! Even Donkey from Shrek would love this waffle maker!

This is my first waffle maker and I just love it!! It heats up quickly and lets me know when my waffles are done to perfection. I was hesitant about not being able to remove the plates to wash them, and was very happy to see that not one speck of waffle stuck to them. All I did was wipe them after they cooled. (No need to oil or spray the waffle maker before using.) Just follow the instructions in the booklet and you will have fast, yummy waffles! One additional bonus - I used my 20% off coupon and got a great price.

Hello All - I just purchased this Waffle Iron - as I love Belgian Waffles, the nice crispy kind.
I was in the middle of making waffles, put in my first batch in my 'old' Cuisinart waffle maker - to my surprise, the waffle maker died as soon as I put in the batter, have no idea why, have had it about 5 years and used maybe 10X, so I was bummed.
In a rush, as I had batter in the bowl. I went to BB&B to buy a new one. Before I left I looked at these helpful reviews everyone writes and went a shopping. Calphalon Waffle Maker was my destination.
Well, the were out of this particular model, but had the store demo one. I was desperate, even though it had grubby paw marks all over it - I said I have batter waiting and this is the one I want...please sell it to me - and they did. So home I went to finish my waffle journey.
I was a bit disappointed the waffles came out great - but - I used a recipe from scratch - and the waffles came out like thick pancakes that were shaped like waffles. I did love those litle lights and how they lit up as the waffle was cooking, as I was standing there wondering if I was using it right. I had a thought, I wonder if a little bell goes off when it's done, (I hadn't totally figured out the light thing yet)...and to my pleasant surprise there was a nice little chime when the waffle was done and the lights had stopped at the doneness the dial was set at. Cool!
Does anyone have a great Waffle recipe that makes nice crisp and crunchy waffles, those are my favorite kind. I'm still on my best home made waffle journey - my Cuisinart worked great...but have no idea why it just died with very little use.
Since I bought the demo model, I did not get a 'How To' manual...so I thought some of you waffle officioanado's would be able to help me out!
Thank you and Happy New Year!!

The waffle maker is THEE BEST! The only issue I had was in the instructions that came with the machine - it said to add 2 cups of batter - DON'T! This has GOT to be a mistake. We hesitantly added the full two cups (we make waffles every weekend but were then using a smaller machine). After adding the mixture and closing the top - batter started oozing out of the machine all over the place - it went everywhere and since the machine was hot - there wasn't anything we could do but watch it cook to the sides of the machine until the waffles were done. We thought it might be our batter so we tried another recipe and we used 1 and 1/2 cups and it still oozed out. The instructions did not come with a recipe but stated that any recipe can be used. We found that 1 and 1/4 cup of batter is just the right amount and the waffles are magnificent. I love that you can adjust if you want crispy or softer waffles. They are perfect everytime! Highly recommend this product.
