Customer Reviews for Oxo Oxo Good Grips Stainless Steel Mandoline Slicer

Oxo Oxo Good Grips Stainless Steel Mandoline Slicer

User-friendly mandoline is a great addition to any cook's kitchen. Stainless steel straight and wavy blades can be set to any slice thickness with the easy-turn dial. Great for making cucumber salads, potato chips, french fries, carrot sticks and so much more. Slicer stays stable with non-slip feet that sit wide apart. Stainless steel runway is textured to prevent food from sticking, while body is curved to leave plenty of space below for food to accumulate. The soft handle of the slicer sits lower than your body to keep your hand out of the way. Food is held securely and fingers are protected with the food holder that snaps beneath body when storing. Blades are easy to remove for cleaning and are safely covered when not in use, and they're stored on board for convenient storage. Storage is even more convenient and compact with folding legs that simply tuck underneath.

Fantastic Mandoline

I purchased a very expensive French Mandoline 12 years ago. Tried using it a couple of times, but it did not work well. Gave up and stored it away. I got it out again after hearing Tom Douglas on the radio and tried the mandoline again. It still didn't work very well. So I gave it to the Goodwill and bought this OXO (which the Chef Tom Douglas mentioned) and it is FANTASTIC! Works so well on small and large items, easy to store, easy to clean, has foldable legs so nothing gets stuck under it and with the legs folded, it fits in a drawer. The holder has retractable teeth so when the item gets smaller, the retractable teeth get shorter. OXO did it again. Besides, the price was 1/4 the amount I spent on the fancy French Mandoline. I cook every night from scratch and use it just about every night. This will be great when we have lunch/dinner guests.

Great Product

After reading over the other reviews, many of which were negative, I am baffled. This is a great product! Yes, the blades are sharp. They are suppose to be, it is a mandoline. Anyone who is slicing fingers is not using it correctly. End of story. It is sturdy, easy use and to clean and performs as advertised. I have used it on a variety of vegetables and after a little experimenting, found what works for me. The directions clearly state that it is not intended for soft fruits and vegetables (specifically tomatoes) so why use this product for those items and then complain that it doesn't work? I love this tool and have found it to be a great addition to the kitchen. You won't be disappointed.

Dangerous Item-DO NOT BUY

I trusted the Oxo name and it sent my directly to the ER. 1. Instructions to change blades are tiny pictures with arrows, impossible to decipher. 2. Food gripper is not adjustable and only accommodates items larger than a lemon, so forget slicing a small cucumber, lime or radish. 3. Blades are EXPOSED, SHARP AND DANGEROUS. Within 30 seconds of using this gadget, I sliced two of my fingertips. Three weeks later and I cannot yet move my swollen and painful fingers. This item should be removed from the BBB shelves. If after reading this review you still insist on buying a mandoline, buy one with a COVERED BLADE. I saw one advertised in a popular chef's catalogue this week, same price as the OXO and "Well-Suited" to your needs.

Well, I'm going to have to return this item! I was looking forward to my purchase as I have always wanted a mandoline, but I'm so disappointed in it. I had trouble slicing a cucumber and the potato was almost impossible to slice!! I will continue to look at other mandolines and hope the next one is better than this one.

OXO Mandoline

This gadget is a blessing. I'm a speed demon in the kitchen and I love my food to look beautiful. This is best mandoline I've owned.
I've been using OXO Mandoline many times a week for years. It will slice just about anything a knife can but with uniformity. Great value, easily sharpened and cleaned. Great gift.
This week I made Asian cucumber salad, sautéed mushrooms for gravy, Potatoes Anna, animal style onions, thinly sliced asian pears and persimmons, "peeled" carrots, sliced off corn kernels from the cob. Be creative; it's a great friend.

I have a lot of respect for OSO products and this is no exception. The mechanics work perfectly and it feels just right in your hands.

Good produvct - but only gets occasional use

Bought 2-3 years ago. Really only use it for special occasions when slicing and juliennes, french fries need to be really uniform, otherwise quicker to use a chef's knife, given the time and effort to assemble/disassemble wash and dry. Last few slices of a vegetable - when you can't use the guard - need to be cut by hand to avoid risk of cutting yourself. Having said all that, when you really need it, it produces excellent results.

not worth the bucks

While the adjustable cutting depths and easy blade changes are desirable, the plastic "anchors" on the changeable blade has little tensile strength, and broke within a year of purchase. It is a bulky item to store, and could be streamlined. More expensive than the benefits warrant.

More Dangerous Than expected?

I have been wanting a mandoline for some time to expedite in my salsa making. I have been hesitant because of the risk of injury and because I have small boys(serious risk of injury).
When I finally made the plunge I was really excited to make use of the julienne feature as a quick first step to dicing. I started with an onion which was very hard to push which made me almost need to push from behind rather than from the top(thus more dangerous). By the time I got halfway down the onion just stopped moving through the blades and started to roll over the top and separate instead(from the massive froce required). Moving on to the tomato it only took 1 pass to realize that this product was garbage as the tomato also rolled over the top and collapse rather than go through the blades. The result was a very messy crushed tomato, this mandoline makes a better juicer than a slicer.
In fairness they do specify that for tomatoes you need to use a side to side motion while cutting but that is not really possible with the julienne blades up.
Also of note the feed plate was crooked so a 1/8" slice on the left side turned into a 1/4" on the right.
This is what you get for not buying the cheap model?

I bought this for the thin thin slices and fancy cuts. It's very sharp and works extremely well. Still working on getting garlic cloves all sliced up but i think i may be too careful with it. I make a lot from scratch, this will be a big help and now i can make homemade potato chips as well.I only wish there were more blades but that it because i am a worry wart. There are all you need to make all the cuts. Guess i would like a spare. That is why i give it 4 stars.

This mandolin was a Christmas present for me and my wife. I have used it and it works wonderfully - just like Chef Mario Batali demos! So easy to use, so easy to clean. It's rugged and looks like it will last as one of our favorite kitchen tools. Bravo Oxo!
