so disappointed

Well, I am beyond disappointed. I asked my husband for this item for one of my Christmas gifts to replace my 30.00 Black and Decker blender that I have had for a few years. I have a smoothie for breakfast and dinner every day.
Right before Christmas my blender finally died so I was thrilled that my husband actually got me this blender! Tonight, April 10th - I am making my dinner, pick up the carafe and realize that it is broken. Smoothie is leaking all through the bottom of it. It was absolutely fine this morning, now it has this huge space in it, can't tighten it - I am one unhappy camper.
I am assuming that Bed, Bath and Beyond is not going to give us any sort of exchange - and seeing the other comments, looks like KitchenAid may not be very helpful either, Fan-freakin-tastic.

Carafe is a piece of junk

After going through five, yes I did write five carafes in 15 months, Kitchen Aid refunded my money. Every one started to leak, and this is the NEW design. All I used the blender for was to make Smoothies every morning with lots of frozen fruit, 16 ozs of soy milk and 8 ice cubes.
The customer service was fantastic, wonderful people. The motor is very powerful, a bit noisy, but the Carafe is a total piece of junk.

Like healthnut30 said in a previous review, the previous model is the one that has the carafe leak. This blender is amazing. My husband and I got it for our wedding and we use it at least once a day (sometimes more). We've never had a problem with it and have highly recommended this model to all of our friends!

Bad design

After just five uses, the carafe started to leak. The blade mechanism is poorly constructed and the retaining nut loosened allowing for the leak to occur. Not worth the price paid.
The blender base is solid and the power is adequate, but what does this matter if the carafe design is inadequate. Don't know why KitchenAid has not addressed this design flaw.

Good for occasional use

It's a good quality blender. It blends well, but if you use it every day or a couple times a day, like I do, the jar will begin to leak underneath. I think they used a plastic that can't handle much heat, so if you try to blend something really smooth and let it go a couple minutes or if you are blending something rather thick, like a chile sauce, it gets hot and starts to warp or melt. I had a blender that had no problems for about a year, then the replacement only lasted a month. The replacement for that made it a little longer. If you buy this and use it every day, try to blend in spurts so it doesn't get too hot and be careful with thick purees. I think I'm going to move up to a Vitamix or cheaper Waring commercial model.

Please be aware that the reviews indicating a leak in the caraf are incorrect. The previous model, not this one - KSB560, had a defect admitted by KitchenAid. That caraf was glass. This is the newest model with a redeisgn of the caraf to avoid the cracks and leaks.

had to purchase a replacement carafe due to leak

After 2 years, the carafe began to leak. The liquid contents of the carafe leaked onto the motor base and down onto the counter while running the blender. Carafe cannot be fixed once this happens. I purchased a new carafe including the blade but not including the black carafe lid for just under $30 including shipping. By the way, the blender is not quiet! Also, the motor is powerful, and it shakes the lid loose from the carafe while blending. I never take a step away from it while in operation. I stand there holding the lid down, but the blender does its work quickly. I like this blender, I am just very disappointed that I cannot tighten or replace the blade/nut assembly.

works GREAT until carafe starts leaking

This is a powerful blender that works great. I have had it for 2 years, used it occasionally, and loved it. When my son started high school, I started making him a smoothie every morning for breakfast: frozen fruit, milk, honey, fresh banana. The carafe started leaking...a lot. Liquid just runs out the bottom onto the blender base, the counter. I tried to tighten it myself and could not tighten it. I did some research. I am not alone - this blender carafe leaks. The blade is not removable, so you cannot get new parts or washers. Someone's review mentioned that you have to twist the blades in the opposite direction because they are threaded on in reverse. I gave it to my husband, and engineer, and he was able to tighten it a little, but leaking quickly increased again. I have to either replace the entire carafe ($50 plus shipping) or replace the entire blender. My recommendation, if you are going to buy this blender, is to not put it in the dishwasher, even though it says you can. It is very easy to just rinse it after every use. Although the blender's blades can handle the frozen fruit, I don't think the mechanism that moves the blades is up to it, and that mechanism cannot be replaced or removed to fix. I have started softening the frozen fruit in the microwave before blending. I don't know at this point if I should buy a new carafe or buy a different blender. I bought this blender because it was highly recommended by Americas Test Kitchen.

Previous model not recommended for real blending

I have the previous model to this one. It has a glass carafe. I have had it for about 5 years and I use it mainly for mixing protein drinks (but used very lightly). It seems to have a design flaw in the carafe as many dry ingredients end up down around the blade and even with stirring never get blended so that is all waste. If you blend anything with ice you end up with ice chunks even when you run it longer which then pumps a lot of air into the mixture.
Lately I noticed it seemed to be making a loud sound so decided to run the base without the carafe on it. The noise was normal (this design has a plastic shaft with shark tooth shaped prongs on top). So I decided to hold down on the carafe thinking it wasn't seating onto the base securely. Wrong thing to do. It broke off several of these teeth. So I looked for a small appliance repair shop in St Louis. There is only one in an area with over a million people. I called the shop and the replacment part is only $7.95 but labor to put it in is $28, they were very rude, their shop is a good 15 miles from my house plus they have limited hours . I called KitchenAid and their price is $35 for shipping, minimum labor is $30 plus cost of parts. Or they would sell me a refurb until for almost the cost of a new one. It still works so I will keep it until I get a replacement. I want to start green juicing and I know this blender would leave the mixture pretty chewy so am looking at a Blendtec.
KitchenAid did improve the design using a cast-iron shaft with mating piece so my issue is no longer a problem. However, that does not change how the blender mixes the ingredients.
For some this might be the perfect blender. For heavy use or crushing ice I suggest going with a blender designed for the task.

this blender worked great for the first 2 months. we mostly use it for smoothies. after 2 months it leaks at bottom around nut/blade assembly. This week the blade completely snapped in half. going to take it back. Why can't someone make a decent blender that doesn't cost $500????

Terrible Customer Service

I purchsed this blender a while back and loved it for several months. It's powerful enough to crush ice and make great smoothies. The large pitcher is made out of polycarbonate that is scratch resistant, shatter resitant and dishwasher safe. After several months of placing in dishwasher only 1 or 2 times per week the pitcher cracked in about 10 places all around the base. I cannot make drinks anymore because they leak all over my kitchen when i start pouring ingredients in. I called kitchenaid and they were extremely unhelpful. They offered to sell me a replacement jar for $46.98 including shipping~~!@#!!!!!! THATS HALF THE COST OF THE BLENDER FOR JUST A JAR!!. Some customer service. Manager would not offer any kind of assistance. They produce a flawed product and to replace a part they incorrectly manufactured from the start the customer is charged almost Bed Bath's wholesale cost for the entire blender with motor and everything but for just the plastic jar. Why do you deserve to make a greater profit off me on a replacement part for flawed product then you did on the entire blender first time around. Furthermore the replacement pitcher only carries a 30 day warryanty, just long enough to make it through a few dishwasher cycles before it shatters again. Buyer Beware. Spend your money on a sturdier product, no $100 blender should break and require an almost $50 replacement part. Companies like kitchen air should really review how they treat their customers there are many comparable products out there and i advise you look at them instead. Sorry Kitchen aid. I love your products but you made a dud here and this blender is selling almost everywhere. I'm sorry for all the unsuspecting consumers who purchased it.

Super Smooth Raw Greens

I have recently added raw green smoothies to my diet. This blender rocks! I researched and considered buying blenders that out-priced this one by a few hundred bucks. This blender only has 1/3 the power of the more expensive brands, but it' s pitcher and blade design gives it the upper hand. It continuously pulls contents through the blades making creamy smooth drinks.

I have tried the Oster, Black and Decker and Cusinart Blenders. I was looking for a good blender to make milkshakes. The kitchenaid is by far the best. I put the milk, ice cream and strawberries in the blender and in less than 15 seconds, I had great milkshakes that were blended perfectly.

Flawed product..bad customer service Kitchen Aid

This product has a flaw with the jar and blade assembly. The nut the holds the blade in the jar comes loose after limited use and allows content to leak onto the motor housing unit. The nut can't be tightened to prevent leaks from happening. Although I have tightened the nut multiple times, everytime I try to reuse the blender the nut loosens and the pitcher leaks contents. Don't pay $100 for a blender that has only lasted 18mos. for me despite limited weekly use. Either pay more for a better product or spend less for a product that will last just as long.

My husband and I registered for this item, not knowing if we really needed it or not. After getting it from one of my bridesmaid's who said it was the greatest kitchen electric ever! Now, I agree with her. Its so easy to use and clean. The pitcher is all one piece, so no need to unscrew and piece back together after cleaning. The pitcher is a great size, large enough to make blended drinks for four but, small enough to fit under my cabinets. Now, I work for bed, bath and beyond and I suggest it to all registry couples!
